My beautiful and talented 16 year old daughter started taking Accutane in November 2005. We were aware of some depression and birth defects, which was clearly emphasized. My family doctor's son had also taken Accutane, so I felt we had no worries because my daughter was not sexually active, which seemed to be the main concern with the dermatologist. After one month my daughter suffered a basketball injury and never quite recovered and she really didn't put out the effort as well. She was the starting point guard, played AAU since 4th grade and planned to play basketball in Div 2 college. Because of injury and unwilling to play she was asked not to try out for Junior Year. We assumed it was because of the injury. Many Physical therapy visits later ... nothing except cortizone shot helped. Through busy Christmas season, we really didn't notice the depression and she hid it very well. Until it was noticeable... she lost 16 lbs and now weighs 99 lbs. Loss of appetite, withdrawn from others except her boyfriend, (who she totally consumed), vomiting, grades lowered, lathargic, sometimes sleeping all the time and then not being able to sleep followed. The biggest reaction that we noticed was the irritability and the sparatic depression, and not knowing of the Accutane reactions, we assumed it was normal teen activity with boyfriend issues and because of the weight loss and high school rumors we immediately had many blood tests taken for every reason possible. Until this past Easter night, an incident with my daughter scared her boyfriend so bad that he let the school counselor know and they then called me. Suicidal thoughts! and possible attempts! My beautiful daughter was so different...she didn't want to talk about it and we normally talked about EVERYTHING! She denied and hid her depression. When the weight loss was noticed we stopped the Accutane, which was the 1st of March. The major incident happened 1 month later. The doctor today has recommended an EEG, Ensure and acid reflex meds. When the EEG is done we will know how to proceed. I just want my daughter back! My sister found the information on the web sites and made me aware of the adverse reactions. WOW!
